Novelty of Life (Sea Monkeys)

Acrylic painting, 12″ x 48″

Acrylic, pastels, and pencil on gallery canvas.

This graffiti abstract painting was inspired by the 1957 product Instant Life — but you might recognize it better after it was renamed in 1962 as Sea Monkeys. The original 1960’s comicbook advertisements promised that these miniature creatures were trainable.

I found ingredients really odd (I always believed Sea Monkeys were simply monkey eggs and water). The actual ingredients seem like something out of a science-fiction B-movie… salt to stimulate reproduction for example. The painting includes the full list of interesting ingredients inside the package… and some word associations.
